During the XXII Symposium of Cryptogamic Botany we are committed to follow the United Nations Sustainable Events Guide. According to them, a sustainable event is “designed, organized and implemented in a way that minimizes potential negative impacts and leaves a beneficial legacy for the host community and all involved”, and we took steps to achieve that.

The decision to organize the Symposium back to back with the 15th European Ecological Federation (EEF) Congress was made so that travelling could be reduced to only one trip. Nevertheless, we will compensate the carbon emissions generated by participants’ travelling. This is being done in partnership with Mossy Earth. Watch the video to learn more about this. More information about this will be given during the symposium.

In addition, a number of specific actions are also being undertaken to reduce the carbon and overall environmental footprint of the Symposium. We encourage participants to choose low-emission transport and mobility, and to avoid the generation of waste. Meals will be primarily prepared with regional products, and animal product consumption will be kept at low more sustainable level. Symposium materials will be produced by local artisans, recycling or repurposing existing materials, simultaneously lowering our environmental impact and creating economic and social benefits for the local community.

We will soon give more details on all actions taken to make this a more sustainable event. We expect to influence change by leaving a positive legacy and hopefully inspiring those involved to live more sustainably.
