Our pre-symposium 1-day excursion (July 23th) will take place in Peninha, Sintra mountain range, ca. 40 km from Lisbon.
Sintra mountain range, located Northwest of Lisboa, marks the western edge of the European Continent. This region is characterized by peculiar climatic conditions, a mixture of Atlantic and Mediterranean features, that enables the occurrence of species from different biogeographical regions. Peninha is one of the highest points of the eastern part of Serra de Sintra, at ca. 500 m altitude.
High humidity and a thick forest mantle in most of the region make this a suitable habitat for a huge variety of cryptogams, including some Macaronesian species and several species of conservation concern for Portugal. Though native flora has been altered by man and fire, invasive
Eucalyptus globulus and
Acacia melanoxylon have been progressively substituted by native vegetation. Forest vegetation is mostly dominated by
Cupressus lusitanica, Quercus faginea, Q. pyrenaica, Q. suber and
Arbutus unedo, and saxicolous and epiphyte cryptogam species are diversified and abundant. The excursion is being organized by Dra. Cecíla Sérgio, Dra. Ireneia Melo and Prof. Manuela Sim-Sim. The price includes transport from Lisbon, and a lunch box for picnic. More details will be provided soon for those interested in attending the excursion. Excursion will only take place if a minimum number of people register.
